The Newport Beach Film Festival recently featured the docu-film “Orange Sunshine” to a sold-out crowd. The film chronicles the 1960’s hippie counter-culture of Laguna Beach, recounting the movement of The Brotherhood of Eternal Love and how their radical ideology affected Laguna Beach. The film’s title references mind-altering LSD The Brotherhood produced and distributed throughout Southern California. They saw themselves as peace loving hippies on a mission to turn the world onto “psychedelics” in hopes of bringing about self-discovery and social change.
The film documents their campground in the canyon called “Dodge City”, the famed Mystic Arts World on S. Coast Hwy. and Main Beach. Tragically, one of the 8 principal members of The Brotherhood died during a psychedelic trip while the remaining 7 agreed to finally tell their stories to a relatively young OC filmmaker, William A. Kirkley.
Cast members were on hand for a post-screening Q & A with some admitting to using LSD well into their 70’s! A few of the elders from The Brotherhood even created a guidebook to taking psychedelics to “trip” safely. A simulated LSD trip was produced by interactive design company “Masters of Shapes” and musical score was created by Matt Costa whose radio show “Colored Glass Radio” can be heard on KX 93.5 FM on Tues. at 11pm and Thurs. at 5pm.
