Rivian pursues retail, event space at historic Laguna Beach South Coast Cinemas.

Laguna Beach, CA, July 30, 2020-- Electric Adventure Vehicle maker Rivian is pursuing the purchase of the historic Laguna Beach South Coast Cinema. The proposed theater purchase is part of Rivian’s larger retail strategy of pursuing adaptive reuse of existing buildings where possible, and of fostering community in places where Rivian owners live and play.

The Laguna location will serve to nurture the town’s close connection to the arts and outdoors through various events and amenities. A meeting place where people can both start and end their adventures, the beachfront South Coast Highway address will also feature additional guest retail space and a coffee bar. Rivian will revive film screenings and special events once restoration is complete. Subject to city approvals, the project is slated for opening in 2021.

The first theater on this site opened in 1923, over a decade before the Pacific Coast Highway was conceived. The present structure, the first concrete and steel building constructed in Laguna Beach, was opened in 1935 and stood as the city’s only cinema until it closed its doors in August 2015.

The building’s interior will be carefully updated, as many of the finishes were either not original or have not survived the theater’s transitions, but several signature interior details will be restored, said Denise Cherry, Senior Director of Facilities Design at Rivian. “The community in Laguna has a deep artistic history and a strong love of nature. This Rivian space will continue the town’s long tradition of connecting people to the arts and the outdoors.”

Rivian expects to open 10 retail locations by the end of 2021. Rivian locations will feature test drives, vehicle delivery experiences, deep dives into vehicle customization options, places for kids to play and explore, access to staff with deep product expertise, and location-appropriate merchandise. Those who prefer not to visit a Rivian location can preorder a vehicle anytime at rivian.com.
