Laguna Beach’s very own grand dame, Gloria Fickling, aka Honey West, stepped out on the red carpet Saturday at the Newport Beach Film Festival. The 25 minute documentary, Honey West: The Gloria Fickling Story, was one of nine Inspirational Short Documentaries screened at The Triangle Cinemas to a full house. It is certainly inspirational to see the nearly 93 year young woman with the same lust for life she had when she and her late husband, Skip Fickling, were taking Hollywood by storm.

The series of novels written by the pair about a smart, sexy, female crime detective named Honey West parlayed into a television series in 1965-1966 that earned the lead actress, Anne Francis, a Golden Globe. The documentary features interviews from Gloria, Laguna Beach Mayor, Toni Iseman, and Laguna treasure, Sande St. John, who were also in attendance. The film's producers made the short film to garner Hollywood's interest in the TV series becoming a feature film.

According to post-screening chatter, "it’s looking good" so keep your fingers crossed for Gloria to attend that premiere. Stars of other inspiring documentaries were also in attendance. One member featured in a film about a senior men’s baseball team came all the way from Brooklyn for the screening, The Running Man of Pasadena, his story of perseverance and love for running attended, and Miami Dolphins Wide Receiver, Kenny Stills, who leads a life of activism off the field was also there to represent his film, Kenny.

Put On Your Dancing Shorts, is a series of dancing short docs scheduled for May 2nd at 6pm at the Triangle Theatre. Tickets/Info: NewportBeachFilmFest.com
