Review: Blues In The Night

Even though the Playhouse is currently a construction site and it was warm and sunny for the first time, the house was full for the opening Sunday matinee. The four top performers were accompanied by a super tight five-piece orchestra jiving live for you behind a stage veil every piece of this musical. This alone is a reason to see the show. But the ladies are from another world. Ranging from a deep, soul filled mama type to a sultry rebel beauty, their a cappella blew the roof off the house. I wish another male was included because as good as the singer of the show was, it is just impossible to conquer these three angels. This play definitely shows why art is the best humanity has to offer. If you like a hybrid of Pointer Sisters and Gospel singing your favorite all-time tunes, from Gershwin to Ellington, where you have the chance to get actively involved clapping and stamping to the blues, this is the show for you. On stage at Laguna Playhouse, Feb. 20--March 10.
