Review: Barefoot in the Park

Barefoot in the Park was a 1963 Broadway play written by Neil Simon and adapted to the Laguna Playhouse stage by Director Michael Matthews. It has two intermissions that break the play into three acts.

This romantic comedy is staged during the 60s in midtown Manhattan. Newlyweds Corie and Paul Bratter soon encounter differences of opinion post-honeymoon bliss when they're forced to confront the realities of life in the big city. The set is brilliantly designed in split level with an outdoor ledge leading to the rooftop and an imaginary 5th floor walk-up to simulate the brownstones of Manhattan.

Corie's doting mom Ethel, performed by Rita Rudner, and their oddball, outgoing neighbor Victor, played by Paul Rodriguez, venture out for a wild Ouzo fueled dinner party where Ethel finds herself enjoying the company of Victor, an unlikely suitor. Each of the main characters begins the process of learning to accept the other as individuals. The relationships provoke the audience to examine how they would feel or act given the circumstances. This romantic comedy is filled with plenty of laughs exemplified by Rita Rudner's impeccable timing, clever quips and wry writ shining throughout.

The Playhouse reception on Opening Night with the cast, staff and stage crew treated to unlimited champagne and sweet treats was extra fun. Kick your shoes off and run to see Barefoot in the Park.
