Mic Immersion Program: Pray For a Cure

Last month, an important step was taken to bring the world a little closer to peace. Seven teenagers from the Christian, Jewish and Muslim faith came together to write a song to spark cultural change and promote peace. Learning about each other’s faith made them realize they all have been victims of negative stereotyping. At the end of an intensive two day session, a beautiful song was written and recorded, bridges were built and seeds of hope were planted.

Music in Common, Inc. is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to strengthen, empower, and educate communities through the universal language of music. Founder, Todd Mack, began the movement 10 years ago to honor his friend Daniel Pearl who was a journalist executed because he was Jewish. Todd wanted to do something that would end the hatred. The first west coast MiC Immersion program was facilitated by local musician and KX 93.5 DJ, Jason Feddy. Feddy’s logic is simple: Bring people together to create something because if peace is ever going to be achieved it needs to be a collaborative, creative process.

Mayor Steve Dicterow spoke eloquently at the presentation emphasizing the survival of humanity needs to begin at the grassroots level. He said, “Bringing a generation together to replace values of violence with love and empathy is a great starting point to end world violence. Programs like this allow us to think globally but act locally.”

The kids who participated realized they had more than just “music in common” and now know that it is possible to create understanding. They all want to be loved, accepted and believe there’s hope for a brighter future.
