STARS OF DANCE
The 14th Annual Laguna Dance Festival at Laguna Playhouse was a sell-out Oct. 5 - 7. The most prestigious dance companies and dancers from across North America came to Laguna to mesmerize audiences with incredible artistry.

The Laguna Dance Festival Mission Statement is to present world-class dance performance, increase public appreciation for the art and provide quality dance education.

Friday night's highly anticipated tribute to legend David Bowie titled STAR DUST was conceived by Complexions Contemporary Ballet founder, Dwight Rhoden, and performed by the current Complexions dance troupe. It is a thoughtful curation of Bowie’s most prolific compositions superbly interpreted by the powerful intensity of beautiful bodies in motion. The glam-inspired costumes and stage lighting weren't overstated but served to heighten the dancers' emotions. Prior to the main event, a contemporary ballet sequence paid tribute to the composer, Johann Sebastian Bach.

Sunday’s program was aptly titled "Stars of Dance". Principal dancers from Ballet West, San Francisco Ballet and the National Ballet of Canada graced the stage giving us glimpses into their life-long dedication to their craft. Laguna native, Skylar Campbell was loudly applauded from the hometown audience as he performed a solo and a duet with principal ballerina, Jordana Daumec. Also captivating were principal dancers, Chase O’Connell, and Beckanne Sisk, whose chemistry sizzled in costumes designed to look naked. A rousing number "Busk" performed by 12 students of USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance added intensity to the afternoon's program.

Jodie Gates is both Founder and Executive Director of Laguna Dance Festival and is the driving force behind this premier event. In addition to this, she's an Executive Director and Professor of Dance at USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance. She is fiercely committed to keeping culture and art of dance thriving in Laguna. Scholarships and programs such as Art Walk performances, Summer Intensive, quarterly Master Classes and Festival of Arts performances are solely dependent on donors. By becoming a member of the Sustainability Campaign at lagunadancefestival.org. the future leaders of dance can flourish. Any level of support is greatly appreciated.

*Coming soon is another Dance Festival event! Sankofa Danzafro, Columbia Contemporary Hip Hop Company, will perform at Neighborhood Congregational Church on October 25, 2018. Tickets:lagunadancefestival.org
