Embrace the Chaos

Unpredictable and sometimes straight up bizarre, “Heisenberg” at the Laguna Playhouse proves an engaging, if not erratic, departure from the playhouse’s usual productions.

“Heisenberg” follows (though it sometimes feels like stalking) the relationship of freespirited American Georgie (Faline England) and sedentary Alex (Joe Spano) after a freak meeting in a London train station. Where that should have been the end of it, Georgie goes to extreme lengths to find Alex again, something that would cause most of us to call the police, but instead perhaps from curiosity as much as loneliness, an unlikely relationship begins to form.

England’s portrayal of Georgie is a marvel to watch. Constantly in motion and unpredictable, there are several moments where it’s expected that she’ll reveal a diagnosis of bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, but no such moment ever arrives leading to the conclusion that she is just a walking unknown variable.

Spano is by design her natural opposite, down to his guarded body language and unassuming beige clothing. Though he has moments of flair for life, Spano wonderfully downplays him as a man waiting around for nothing in particular.

Exquisitely acted by England and Spano, the chemistry between the characters is so compelling that the lack of intermission is of no consequence.

On stage thru April 14. For tickets, go to www.lagunaplayhouse.com or call 949-497-2787.
